About Me

As well as blogging I'm a freelance copywriter and have a day job at Aardman Animations, where I have the fun task of looking after the social media accounts for Wallace and Gromit, Timmy Time and Morph. When I'm not sitting in front of a laptop, you'll usually find me clearing up LEGO - I have two sons, enough said...

Why I blog

I'm Bristol born and bred, and have lived here all my life, bar a 12-year stint in London where I worked for a variety of global brands. But then I had a baby and decided it was time to move back West and pursue a freelance career, working with a number of national and local organisations, including the UK's fastest-growing parenting website, Netmums.com

Somehow, in between raising two boys and doing all that other life stuff, I found time to set up this blog, a little outlet for writing about the things I love: Bristol, family, fashion, food and travel. Every so often, something really gets to me and I just have to get my thoughts down in writing (you'll find a few rants on blog as well as pretty pictures of family holidays...)

I also wanted to write honestly about the challenges of raising children; while this isn't a parenting blog (the world does NOT need another one of those) I wanted to share some of my experiences of being a mum, as well as offering some thoughts on issues that many parents worry about (in fact, my post on Things I Learnt About Primary School is my most popular post to date.)

The 'Bargainista' bit

As the name of my blog suggests, I'm all about living a fun and fulfilled life without getting into debt. I took 18 months off work when my first son was born and when I did return to work, my earnings were significantly reduced - you don't get a work life balance without a dent to your wallet, sadly. So when I started this blog I was keen to show it was still possible to have fun on a shoestring, offering a bit of a counterpoint to all those blogs that give a rather romantic view of life, with their perfect shots of endless tropical holidays and designer handbags.

That said, I really like nice things - foreign holidays, pretty clothes and weekends away - but everything I do is on a budget; hopefully you'll find some tips and ideas to inspire your own wallet-friendly adventures.

Who I've worked with

I've worked with some great brands both through the blog and professionally, so you'll find the odd restaurant review and partnership post here and there; I've made crisp sandwiches with Burts Chips, created a recipe for Exeter Cookery School and learnt how to spatch-cock a chicken with Absurd Bird restaurants.

Professionally, I've worked with brands including Sony PlayStation, English Heritage and The Royal Gardens at Highgrove (as well as many smaller independent organisations.)I've also written a few articles for other websites along the way - here's a piece for Mumazine on family-friendly city breaks and here's something I did for hellobrstl on my favourite places in Bristol.

Work with me!

My blog is very much a non-income generating side project, but I'm always keen to hear from brands who like working with friendly, approachable and reliable bloggers - wherever possible I like to work with local brands who are a good fit with my ethos. If that's you, please get in touch.
